To Bang or Not To Bang, That Is The Question

by Y on May 1, 2013

I’m talking hair here, people!

Warning: I’ve had too much caffeine and a ton of thoughts are floating around in my head, so this may get a little disjointed. In fact this warning shall apply to all my posts, but depending on the time of day you may need swap out the word caffeine for wine, k? Good.

Onwards…

I want to talk about bangs. Yummy bangs, sexy bangs, that ooh la la Zoey Deschanel perfect full bang. That yippie skippy, I get to hide my wig line bang… yes that bang.

Before we get into bangs, lets discuss my current state of hair shall we? Ode to my crap hair… die. Oh wait, you already are, but I digress.

Seriously though, my hair is currently shedding a bit more hair than “my” normal and I feel like this might be a result of me being long overdue for my PRP session. I do those about every 6 months with Dr. Joseph Greco in Florida (I live in Los Angeles) and I do feel that it has helped to keep my shed down, but alas I’m a couple months past due and my hair is raining in my sink, my floor, my shirt, my dog.. well you get the picture. What’s a girl to do? You might be thinking: Umm, get the treatment again? Yes, that DOES seem like the most logical answer and likely what I will do, but this is all so much more complicated than just that. Isn’t it always?

Ultimately I want to be free from pills and any hair loss treatment, free from anything tethering me to having to save the hair that so clearly wants to move on from me. This is the place I so desperately want to get to after 14 years of hair loss. I was successful in getting off my 200mg of Aldactone last year and it’s an amazing feeling to have at least that be done and over with.

I wear a wig full time, I never leave the house without my wig or a hat, so why all the fuss about my hair, why not shave it, ditch the treatments and have a martini? Well, I will be having that martini, but about the other stuff, it’s all a bit of a pickle. I use my hairline on all my wigs, all of them. Every single one of them, even my lacefront. If I shaved my head, I would have to bang all my wigs? And by that I mean put bangs in all my wigs. While some women are successful in wearing wigs (even non lacefronts) without their own hairline, that isn’t how I feel most comfortable. It’s different for everyone. For me, I’d have to either wear bangs (side swept or full)  or be using a tiny bit of my own bio hairline as I do now.  I think part of that is because sections of my hairline are on the lower side, even after having receded over the years. When I bring the wigs to the exact frontal part of my hairline, I look like I should be sitting in the zoo having a banana with the rest of my simian friends. Not my best look I can assure you!

Getting back to bangs…

I love bangs, on other people. I haven’t worn bangs since I was in the 6th grade, and even then I can remember being not so fond of them. It would definitely be an adjustment, but doable, I’m sure.  I can beat my hair to the punch, shave it all off and keep it from falling out on it’s own..forever. Done and Done. Oh dare to dream.

I’m not there…yet. Maybe I will be soon. Maybe. I think I’d have to warm up to the idea of wearing bangs before making any drastic decisions that involve the use of  buzzing devices that remove hair. Currently I buzz the back of my head and keep the front, sides, and top longer, it’s quite an interesting hair cut I must say, but I rather like it and it’s a really great functional hair cut for wearing my wigs the way I like, and not seeing too much of my hair fall out all over the place.

The last time I was at Follea, I tried on one of their wall wigs they had on display there. Not my color, but I wanted to get a feel for the bangs, so here it is!

Bang Bang Bang!

A Wig With Bangs

Tried on this girl at Follea to get a feel for bangs! It’s not my color, but focus on the bangs 🙂

Y, I do have to say that you look absolutely GORGEOUS with bangs!!
I know how you are feeling…wondering what to do if your hair keeps going and your hairline starts to vanish….boy do I know that feeling! When my front hairline suddenly went downhill in a hurry in 2011, I felt like I took a crash course in what to do regarding the front hairline. Thankfully the lace front on the Aero-2 with some fringe/bangs has been my saving grace. I do have to say that I don’t think I would be 100% comfortable WITHOUT a lace front….especially when there’s a wind blowing. When it blows my hair up I don’t want things to suddenly look obviously “wiggy”.
But that said…I was able to get by for 4 months with my el cheap short blonde wiggy … and that didn’t have ANYTHING special….no lace front, no monofilament top, etc. It was just a classic but very well made wiggy and it has some great bangs on there! So yes, going with a fringe/bangs can really do WONDERS:)
I just cannot wear hair that doesn’t have bangs…will not suit me at ALL. So, unless I want to look like a wicked witch from the wild west, the first thing I always have to do is get some bangs cut into any hair I wear ASAP…lol;)

So here is what I would do if I were you:
1. I would experiment with cutting bangs into one of my least used least expensive wiggies…but one that is similar in style to the ones I usually wear.
2. I would be conservative when cutting the bangs….by that I mean, cutting LONGER bangs (definitely not bangs that are too short, especially when starting out) and I would just cut a light bang…not overly dense.
3. I would wear this style around at home for a while…see how I like it and whether I could wear this full time:)
4. If I LOVED it, I would then venture into having one of my regular more expensive wiggies cut with a fringe/bangs.

I REALLY think the way the fringe/bangs are cut in the pic you posted look just GORGEOUS!! I SO LOVE bangs…I think they give a woman a much more flirty, sexy and mysterious look:)

So I do actually think there are tons of “fringe benefits” here…lol;)

I also like the way these bangs are cut on Kim K (very similar to the pic you posted but a little lighter in density.):

HUGS & God bless xx

Hi, Y! Love the bangs! If it ever comes to that..I looked at the Follea web site. I advised my hubby he may need to take me to L. A. at some point. What do wigs start at at Follea, price wise? They don’t have pricing on the site.

Gorgeous – that’s the only thing I can say about these bangs! If this is the only reservation about shaving (alas, it probably isn’t, no matter how much progress we make towards moving on, it’s never that simple), but you don’t have much to worry about. You look stunning – bangs, color, all of it.

Y… I think “maybe” in your situation – try a WISPY bang – not the full, thick thick bang. To be honest – I MISS MY BANGS, damn it!!! I loved them and now with my “hardly any” hairline in front – it’s IMPOSSIBLE to have them… Oh, I miss them…. I know, I said that already… I would do the wispy bang thing…. Maybe try it on just one of your wigs – I think you would look great!!! Annette xo

You look great in Bangs!!! Then again you would look great with clown hair too ha ha. I agree on that one. I would go for the bangs and get used to them and forget about the hair that keeps falling out. I been wearing the topper and funny thing is I have to wear it backwards. It gives me bangs that look pretty natural. I always ask my husband how my hair looks and this blends really well with the hair that I do have. Someday I may have to shave it all off and do full wigs too. I like the topper. It makes me feel like my old hair. I have the topper permed because it’s human hair. My own is also permed. It works for now.
You look great Y!!! Bang bang on :))

I think you should go for it. You have come so far in this last year, and if you feel you’re ready….

We should all take a lesson from our dogs. No matter what life hands you, kick some grass over that $hit and move on!

Thats my advice for Our Fearless Leader of the Pack. 😉

Oh, and in case I forgot to mention, the bangs look AMAZING on you. I truly think you should go for it!

I love the bangs on you and I also love that dark color on you as well. How is it that not only do you look amazing as a blond but you look just as hot as a brunette?? Im jealous. lol
Why dont you have bangs cut into one of the Follea wigs you wear the least right now? Have them cut longer to see how you like and if you do, you can go back and have a little more cut off.
I was wondering what made you decide not to wear your wigs when working out? I have gotten to the point where my hair loss is so bad that I will not leave my house without my Follea on EXCEPT for when I work out. When working out I wear my hair up in a clip in the back and and a thick lulu headband to cover the front. But since my hairloss has gotten so bad, it takes me forever to adjust it so no scalp is showing and I have to use a bunch of Toppik on it. But I just feel so freakish and self conscious, I hate it. I wish I could wear my Follea but I am afraid. My bio hair is in such terrible shape now after going off all of the medications that I really think about cutting it all off into some short pixie cut but I am worried about what to do for working out. Any suggestions?

I too agree with everyone, LOVE the BANGS on you!!!

I’ve had bangs for years, I feel i look younger with them. Saves me money on botox for center forehead crease, Bangtox! I’ve always liked them when wearing a pony tail or top knot gives the look some style.

I was at Follea today getting fitted for my new wig, it was great. Vicka is FANTASTIC!! I’m a dark blonde naturally but I have loads of blonde foils so she is now going to give my very light blonde wig some roots then I’ll be back to have her cut and full bangs added. I’m so excited!! A little anxious about color as blonde can sometimes look really fake. We’ll see… Xanex to help my mind until I get it.

My hair has been shedding like crazy too, it’s so frustrating to see it EVERYWHERE!!! I feel like I’m an overly decorated Christmas tree and I have way too much tinsel hanging off me. Not a good look! I too might shave soon, I have another three treatments of chemo till January so hair is going to continue to shed, so might as well. And, if hair returns it can all grow together.

I wish that none of us had to go through this! Thank you so much Y for starting this site for us all to have a place to bitch and vent.

Jodes xx

Well, let’s just say, after just finally reading 50 shades of grey (in like a day and a half) the title of your blog really got my attention 🙂
Awh yes, the hair shed sick and tired of trying to keep the traitor that wants to leave…
First, I think you are very lovely (bitch – just kidding 😉
I too haven’t sported bangs since elementary school and that was some time ago! When I did shave, which finally forced my wig wearing hand, I had to cut bangs into my wig because she isn’t a lace front and if I found the hairline obvious – it was obvious!
I would say I hated the bangs but looking back on it, I was having to get used to wearing hair and bangs at the same time – I so didn’t feel like me.
Let me tell you, I got used to the bangs in like 2 weeks and now when I pull my bangs to see what no bangs would look like – now it isn’t me?! Oh, roller coaster…
I will say, in my case, and the harsh reality of my personal hair situation is – the buzz, no shed hell has literally saved my spirit / I took at least that huge stress out of my daily routine!
I am not participating in the anxiety filled, self loathing dance of trying to fix whatever is left, just to cover it up.
I think, since you have the luxury of a few wigs, maybe you could put bangs in the one you wear least. That way, it’s your colour, your hair and you could wear it around the house and get used to it? No matter how good bangs would look on and do look on you – you gotta get used to the reflection honey.

I think I’ve gotten to know your little determined self over the last year and whatever you decide, I know you will kick the shit out of it!

Have the best day to you and all my sisters.
Xo

Thank you guys for ALL the amazing comments and feedback! Very much appreciated and so helpful to me to hear everyone’s thoughts. Your support and advice is incredible… thank you!

I’m always teetering around this bang issue. More so now I think since my recent visit from the shed fairy, as me looking at my hair and thinking “Well you slimy little, good for nothing bas****”

I agree with the suggestions of cutting bangs into a lesser used wig and trying that around the house, perhaps while mopping the floor, which I seem to be doing twice a day lately, me likes a clean floor.. what can I say? 🙂

I know it would be a huge adjustment to get used to that reflection, but everything is an adjustment at first and anything we really want is worth working towards and fighting for within the confines of our mind, but make no mistake, my mind has been known to throw up some heavy duty steel walls and bars. But, I never thought I’d be able to wear an wig… and Volia! There one sits on my head today. When I go to get my hair cut the next time I’m going to bring one of my “Behind The Sweater” wigs, you know the ones.. The ones that never get to see the light of day for one reason or another. I got a few of those.

As “N” pointed out there never is only one reservation about anything, and the ability to wear a bang’d wig isn’t the only thing holding me back from shaving my head, there is always the reality that my head will be totally shaved, yea that’s a reservation too! But if I want total freedom I have to be willing to take the road not always the easiest to travel… In time.

Bang Bang Ladies! Thank you All ! XOXO MUAH

@Ciella – Fringe benefits indeed!

@Halias – Bang Bang, Hope you love your new bangs!

@Jen – Lets test that pink fluffy clown wig theory.. I’ll be right back. You lucky bang wearing duck.

@Fina – I think the glasses helped the hair color one me, it’s really too dark, it’s pretty much black. My eye color is like the color of tree sap, it’s too light for the hair, ha ha.

@Erin – regarding your question of the pricing at Follea, I’m not exacting sure but I think the wigs start at around $1700 for the shortest length in their Aero-2 line and go up from there.

@N – It’s true, no matter how much progress we make moving on, there is always some crap pulling us back or holding us down it seems. Nothing is ever as simple as it seems, and we have to give up something to get something often times.

@Mycurlyhair – 🙂

@Annette – Oh you are a banger! Which gives your potential future wig wearing an extra bonus.

@Rachel Jean – I’m going to try the clown hair and the pink fluffy wig that Jen suggested all at the same time… be right back. Congrats on your topper wearing success and high five for having a supportive hubby. I love that.

@Kelly – The color is fun for _____ i’ll fill in the blank. Halloween. Cher Convention. A party at 123 Mockingbird Lane. It’s just way too dark for me, but it’s so cool some gals actually liked it.

@Angie T – I always knew my dog was on to something 🙂

@StaceyG68 – Bang Bang!

@Linda – I decided not to wear wigs while working out because I just couldn’t get comfortable with the idea. Steel bars remember? I fought with that one for so long, but really it was so much easier to just wrap my head around looking like crap at the gym… seriously. I wear a beanie cap to workout and I look like yuck, but whatever. It’s an hour or so and then I’m out of there. There are people that do workout in their wigs just fine. There is also the issue of the sweat getting on the wig, having to wash it more often and maybe potentially shortening it’s life due to extra washings or whatever. Sometimes what women do is buy a cheaper “workout” wig, something they won’t miss and that is easily replaceable when it goes boom.

@Cassy – See color references I left to Kelly above LOL – Thank you guys though.

@misscanada – 🙂

@Jodi – Bangtox – Humm yes! Congrats on your new hair baby you are getting!!! So exciting! I saw your pics in the network, you look amazing with your bangs. hate you. LOL Please keep us posted with your hair wearing journey!

@Lina – 50 shades of grey? I’ll PM you my address, since you ARE done with your copy. 😉 You are a banging success story, thank you for sharing all of your hair journey and for just being your amazing self!

I have to say that even though you aren’t used to either, both the color and the bangs look really, really great on you. Maybe you could use that one for an alternate identity on a trip to Vegas.

That is a cute cut you’re modeling, now you’re making me rethink Zooey D. bangs! 🙂

I have a Milano pony pre-cut with manageable swoopy side bangs. I freaking love the thing. It’s so much easier to wear than my Follea, I literally pop it on and go. Not like my Follea takes that much work, but I love it for the weekends, and that it looks nicer pulled back from my face than my Follea does. Because of the bangs. And it’s a color that I’ve always wanted for myself.
So my suggestion, get yourself to Milano and buy yourself a cheaper wig styled with bangs and give it a test drive! If you love the look get another(!) Follea or have one of yours cut.

I am not sure how much folks would notice drastic changes in length (so far no one has remarked on me wearing my two wigs of different lengths) but I think they WOULD notice differences in bangs. So I, personally wouldn’t feel super comfortable mixing up different wigs with various bang styles at work. Hmm. Maybe I could get over it. Something to think about.

Katsa May 4, 2013 at 7:07 am

Oh, forgot to add that the Milano Pony has the Freedom top sewn in, so it stays put, and one less step.

@moonstruck – Thank you!
@miamisun – Thank you! Yes good for that alternate identity trip to vegas LMAO
@Katsa – I actually do own 2 Milanos, and one of them does have the freedom cap. For me the freedom cap doesn’t work well, It doesn’t provide the ease I require to pull some hair in the front, I do better with the WiGrip since I have placement control with it. I was actually thinking of throwing my experimental bangs into my Milano or my Freeda wig because I don’t wear those normally, so if it’s a bomb it won’t be devastating or anything. I don’t own the pony wig, but I did try it on once when I went to their showroom with a friend and I found it to be comfortable and easy to wear in a … Pony LOL hence their name for it , it’s rather neat because it does clip up well and wigs are not generally comfortable worn in a clipped up state, at least not for me
( it changes the weight distribution of the wig ) but that one is made for that for sure. For awhile I thought about getting the pony wig for working out and then eventually resolved myself to just looking like crap at the gym in my beanie hat 🙂 Who knows, maybe eventually I’ll get one and put bangs (a la Zooey ) into it for a fun easy updo wig. My fear is ending up with another closet wig that doesn’t get worn. That style would be the perfect style for today though.. Farmer’s Market Day!

Happy Saturday!

XOXO

You are so awesome for sharing. Thank you!!! I am considering a wig, but it scares me. I am single and 41, so it makes it all the more stressful if say I were on a date.

I was curious about the PRP treatments and wondered if you’ve ever tried ACell along with it. Have you heard anything about the success rate? I don’t see very many experiences posted..

Hey Y,
I haven’t read all of your blogs but the ones I have seen I like. I think you are very positive and strong (kudos to your fiance and mother as well for being so supportive in your journey to help us strangers cope). I do have some questions about your “girls”. Do you have your hair custom made or do you pefer the ready made? Synthetic vs human hair? What type of hair loss do you have? (I have severe diffuse hair loss but insurance won’t help me out since testosterone is elevated, so they consider it cosmetic vs medical no matter how bad it is, apparently anndrogenic alopecia is not as devastating for a female as areat or chemo related losses) anyways I have a few wigs (some cheap synthetics which look synthetic) a $300 synthetic I hate and I’m not sure where to go with things…. I think yours looks great, and wonder if you sleep/shower in it or if you have ever got vacuum wigs or if you find them secure or itchy (I have burning scalp issues that make me want to rip the wigs off). I’m thinking about shaving and getting a vacuum wig for like 6k but its a huge investment that I’m afraid will be too hot and heavy…..you can bump this to the appropriate forum if that’s better

And thank you for reading the whole think lol
Kp
