Working Out In My Wig – My Initial Thoughts

by Y on August 24, 2012

Finally got my butt in the gym (home gym) this morning, to try and get this body moving! As you recall from a previous post I had stated that my wigs were making me fat! How so, you ask? Well, ever since I got the wigs I haven’t felt comfortable being without them… ever. I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve left the house in the last few months sans wig. At the same time I really couldn’t see myself exercising in my wigs… until today. Me, my butt and my wigs are moving forward, chartering into new waters of  sweat wearing wiglandia!

You are so funny!! You look gorgeous even with a bump on your forehead!! I hope my new hair looks half as good as your wigs. 🙂

You must be a mind reader; I was thinking about just this issue at the gym this morning. So glad you have found your answer and I am thrilled that you are getting out there again; it gives me hope. You look fabulous and you deserve all the happiness in the world. 🙂

After you’ve finished working out, do you take the wig right off to let it air out, or no need? Also, it looks so natural pulled back too! Does the wig “dent” from the hair tie?

@DevastatedMe – You are very sweet. Thank you, this bump is killing me! It’s growing! When I get my hands on the mosquito that did all these bites to me, it’s curtains for him! 🙂

@LisaH – Thank you soooo much! I’ve missed you!

@hope4hair- This was really my first day of sweating in the wig, I took the wig off after I made the video, I didn’t have to that second, I certainly could be fine for a quite sometime after. But in my ideal routine, I would go the gym come home, take the wig off, shower, air dry or blow dry my own hair and put back on a wig. If I was going to put the same one pack on, I’d have to dry the cap a little, it was just slightly damp, not bad at all. Actually the WiGrip acted as an absorbent headband, so if anything I’d need to have more of those on hand so I could switch off between them. Leave the wet one, grab a clean one type thing. Into the WiGrip hamper it will go LOL 🙂 It didn’t really dent from the short time it was in there for my workout, maybe if it was that way all day it would, but I have a feeling it would be pretty minimal since there is a lot of hair, but probably someone dented.

XOXO

This post is timely indeed! I was just thinking about this yesterday at the gym. My lulu headbands are not cutting it for me. They never stay in place (even the no slip one) and when they shift, I’m all paranoid in the gym that patches of my scalp are showing through (cause if one hair shifts the wrong way, it totally does). Uggghh. I think I’m better without the headbands and just maybe using bobby pins or clipping my comb-over in place. Or buying a work out wig. 😉 The lace wig looks great in a pony tail!

So glad to hear that you can work out in the wig without issues. This is something I think we ALL wonder! What about swimming? I assume that is a big no, unless you were bonded. Correct?

Great that you are back to exercising…we all need it! As a matter of fact, I’m off for my run right now! Have a great weekend everyone!

I started avoiding the gym months ago, when I could no longer put my hair into a ponytail because I have so little along the front hairline it was painful. And now its also painfully embarrassing to pull my hair back at all because I have a very small actual bald spot now front and center. I currently wear my hear down in whatever way will hide the most visible scalp, a female combover, It’s horrible, it doesnt look great but I feel like a so-so hair day is better than showing off my scalp. Glad to hear you are making it and with a wig because that is so hard for me to imagine, you look great!!

This HL thing has really taken first seat to taking care of my physical well being. I dont wear a wig yet but hopefully in the future I’ll find a nice one like yours! Until then, I decided that I need to lose the weight no matter if I do get a wig or my bio hair decides to grow back and be normal again, wishful thinking!!

Anyhoo, I workout every other day (hair washing day) where I run and do my powerwalk. I dont even care about what my hair does ~ whether it be shedding or just look plain awful because thank the good Lord, we live in the country and I can run for miles without hardly anyone driving by and seeing my beautiful monster self sweating and looking like a mess!! LOL 🙂

@Christine – I love the lulu headbands! The only way I get them to stay put is I have to bring them all the way forward to my hairline, ends up almost looking like i’m the karate kid, you know how he tied that thing on his head (?) LOL. Basically I have to wear it VERY forward, but it still covers the hairline and the space behind it. I don’t know how women wear them all cute in the middle of their heads, they just slide right off me.

@Ann T – My wigs don’t swim, being the lil’ diva’s they are they don’t want any icky chlorine to touch them. Seriously though I couldn’t dream of it in these wigs, maybe in a much less expensive wig, but I’m not a swimmer anyways, not much of a sun person either, so it works out fine for me. I have heard that some women do swim in their wigs. I wouldn’t do any of that myself with any wig really, but especially not these girls. Yes you can definitely swim in bonded hair, but I’d only do it if it was a less expensive bonded hair I was wearing. When you are paying for top quality hair you sort of want to *try* and keep it in top quality shape by avoiding things that could damage it like chlorine.

@Joy – Believe me when I say, it’s hard for me to believe I’m wearing a wig and loving it. Honestly I never thought this would be where I am at, but it is and it’s OKAY — better than okay for me. I think it’s just good to know that you do have options, there are good wigs, good bonding toppers, clip-in toppers etc. We are not destined to live our life without the hair we need to feel good about ourselves. I also applaud those when just go sans hair and shave it off and are proud to be au natural.

@Jennifer Marie – Oh you are so lucky to be in the country and can run without anyone around! Freedom!! Yes working out is sooo important, not just for our bodies, or weight loss, but our minds. I am most sane when I’m working out regularly. It just makes dealing with life and hair loss that much easier.

XOXO

Hi Y,
I was out of town with my sisters – dad had surgery and I just got back – no WAY I would abandon you 🙂
Funny, I so need to go to the gym – it’s my stress reliever. It was terrible because the last couple of years along with the usual hair loss, I had serious pain due to a spinal injury. When I used to work out, I would wear a hat and my shaggy thin hair was all around, I could barely see – what a sight! When the hat would fall – it was hell! My surgery was May and I haven’t been to the gym in 5 months but I decided tomorrow I would go back – so your video is timely! I’m experiencing much less pain and am anxious to get back to seeing if I can work out. Now, I was using my topper for about a month, but it was painful and the hair shedding ridiculous (I wish I had used that topper a LONG time ago), so I shaved my head – WTF, I know. I transitioned to my wig nine days ago. First – I never shed one tear when I shaved it – or since, strange feeling. The freedom from the hair shed is indescribable. Dilemma – how to go to the gym? Well I am going to move my work out routine to 6 am, I have a gym near me that offers the weight and cardio classes that I used to do (I hope the surgery allows me to continue to work out). I bought some buffs and that is what I am going to wear over my stubbly head – the key – act confident, just like wearing my wig. I hope I have the nerve to follow through – I will keep you updated. I have to say, my wig doesn’t fit the best but I have plans in the next couple weeks to go have my head measured and a custom cap made (hello Visa). I hate hair loss but I’m going to say 25 years of suffering and why the heck did I wait so long – wearing the wig gets easier every single day, I have gone out more in the last week than I did in the last year! Your inspiration was the kick in the pants I needed. I wish I had my own luxurious hair (who doesn’t) but I can see myself being a very happy wig wearer, I see freedom in my future – it’s about time.
I really have to thank you for my progress (you should truly appreciate what a gift you are to me and us).
“See” you soon.
Lina
(i have offically given up the ice cream – that tub is gone 😉 no more.

lol TOO funny ! Hope that thing is gone for you by now ! Guess thats one thing about hair loss…it makes you look at a bump on your face or weight or wrinkles or anything like that and say “whatever… I AM LOSING MY HAIR ! ” lol Prioritizes.

Working out is MAJOR part of my life so Im so happy to see the wig can work. Ive always done workouts at home alone but Id do a much better job if I didn’t have to catch a glimpse of hair as it is now. Wigs =confidence=better workouts. Or at least that’s my fantasy 😉

Thanks again! I appreciate your personality even as much as your living all this out in front of us “strangers”.

Found a woman in my area on here who has tried a wig store and Im going to try it out before I drive to Atlanta for Follea. Hoping to get a “starter” wig and get thru that before I travel and pay for the “big guns”. ( Of course Ive been SAYING Im going to do something for a long time now…maybe saying it on here will get my a#@ moving…didn’t u say you talked to yours?? Gotta try that ! )

XOXO Hope all is well with you.

Hey again! 😀
I know your posts about the Freeda wig (Rina , I think?) was forever ago, but I wondered if you ever wear her or just the Follea wigs ?
I saw a really discounted wig on their site and thought it might be good as a starter wig, but I remembered that you said the Freeda wig hurt pretty bad with the clips and combs. Our hair type/loss sounds exactly the same. No way could mine handle any pull or pressure.
Did you ever try it with the WiGrip ? Or is she banished for good? haha

Thanks for your help ! Hope you are out there getting after life again ! :D:D xoxoxo

Oh time dear time, where art thou? Seem to be so short on time lately. Thanks for all the comments!

@Lina – That spinal cord injury sounds so painful! I’m so sorry you had to go through that along with the surgery, I’m glad you are going better all all front, hair and your injury that you are now able to get back into the gym. It’s hard to go back after you’ve been away for awhile. It’s way easier to just be a couch potato, but working out IS SO important. Yes, the benefits of weight loss etc are great, but the greater benefits I think are what it does for my outlook and just overall sense of well being. Like I wrote in my email to you, I friggin the point you shared you SHAVED your head! I think that’s so awesome and sounds liberating, I’m at a cross roads myself needing/ wanting to get off the medications I take for my hair loss (Aldactone / Birth Control Pills) because I wear wigs now ALL the time, I never leave the house with it, my hair is what it is, but I fear and I mean FEAR the shed that I know will occur. So when I do decide to get off the meds, if the shed is too much for me to bear, I will very likely shave my head as well. This is something I have given a lot of thought to and want to devote a post to addressing this issue. I think a good way to go to the gym with your wig, is to bring a “just in case” ball cap and carry it with you. If you need it you can always put it on over your wig and be fine. Yes it might be hot, but better to be hot than uncomfortable I think. I’m glad you can see that wig wearing even if not perfect today can be the key to your freedom in the future. It’s a process and something we have to be patient with ourselves with for sure!

@phillygrl – Nope the bump is still here darn it, but it’s pretty faded and should be gone by Saturday (hoping, hoping). I think it will take me time to fully adjust to wearing a wig while working out, but if you want something bad enough you work at it. I think getting a starter wig is great!

To answer your question about my Freeda wig, no I don’t wear it and the main reason I don’t wear it is the color, it is DARK, like dark dark.. Like “WTF was I thinking dark” It isn’t close to my bio color at all. The clips/combs are not a deterrent at this point because I wouldn’t need to use them with the WiGrip, I have tried the Freeda wig on with the WiGrip and it stays wonderfully. If I were to wear that wig, I would probably remove the clips and combs since I wouldn’t be using them and they’d just be getting in the way. The other issue I have is the amount of space that is the “Skin” top is smaller than the Milano and Follea. This matters in a wefted wig because the wefts will start higher on the crown and “may” be more visible in the event the wind blows or maybe in other situations like bending over – I’m not sure. Even so, it’s not glaringly obvious, but something my fiancé made note of when I was trying it out in my bathroom that has the brightest lights. I require that all my wigs have to pass the guest room bathroom lighting test LOL – But really the thing holding that wig back from being worn is the color. Freeda hair is quality hair, really nice and pretty. They put more hair in their wigs, than Milano and way more than Follea and some women may really like that. I have come to find that I personally prefer less hair in my wigs. The packed hair in their wigs is not in a wiggy way, it’s just a wig with more hair. I knew a girl growing up (Karen) that had that exact type thickness of hair, it remind me of her. It isn’t as close a match to my own bio hair in texture. They do have a really fantastic discounted section and they are worth checking out because they have a 3 day return policy even on the discounted items. I had ordered 2 wigs when I placed my order and returned one, and it was no issue at all, they promptly credited back my credit card.. so discounted, hair hassle free returns, is A-OK in my book. You don’t have anything to loose by trying it. I’m actually going to be in NY soon and and was thinking it might be fun to stop by their showroom. Of course I’ll have to somehow convince my fiancé to head out to Brooklyn. Not an easy task, so maybe I’ll just head out drinking instead 🙂 I mean… head out the gym (wink wink)

XOXO

@Admin,
Hi, I’m new here and love your tips and keeping us posted on your wig wearing progress. What brand is your workout wig (Mila)? You say it’s a lace front and top? Is that the same as a monofiliment top? I’m in the process of trying wigs and a workout wig will be very important for me. Can’t afford to make any mistakes when I start purchasing. Any tips on open wefted, closed wefted, etc. Just trying to get educated and thanks so much for everything you’re doing for us. Also, if anyone is interested in Milano wigs, check out their site and click on events & promotions. They’re traveling and may be coming to a city near you.

This was great! I am not losing my hair for any particular reason; it’s in my genes to have thinning hair : / I’ve been contemplating the commitment of wearing a wig ALL the time. Rt now I wear extensions or a wig when I go somewhere where I want to look hot. But I’m tired of looking shlumpy when I’m not dressing up. However, I go to the gym 5 days out of the week. Since I do some serious sweating I’m concerned about the glue not sticking for long and ummmm u know, sweat can build up. So then I thought I would not wear a wig to the gym, but then I know I won’t go home and put on a wig just to run errands or to stay home. Any opinion on this?

So I saw that u were planning on wearing your wig to the gym and then air out at home. Are you saying that your wig is glueless but u can wear it in a pony tail and jump around in it?

Thx for the answers and thanks for sharing 🙂
