Wig Washing Part Three – Changing The Part on Anya and More Wig Talk From My Kitchen

by Y on August 16, 2012

Here is Part Three of my Wiggy Washing Video Series. This video is longer than part 1& 2 mainly because I seem to talk and talk and talk. Plus a few gals (ah hem Lina & phillygrl) said to let the tape run 🙂 You’ll see me rinse out Anya (Follea Lifestyle Wig), comb her and change the part on the wig. I had included the upside  down hanging thing I do, but then when I tried to upload it I got am message saying it could’t be longer than 10 minutes, so I had to cut a few things out of this video and that included the upside air drying I do with my wigs. That will be saved for part 4 and in part 4 (hopefully) if I can get it all in, you’ll see what she looks like after she’s freshly washed, air dried and put onto my head. Start to finish, this video series ended up being way longer than I had anticipated.

ok…who else is running to the computer everyday to see more washing video besides me, huh?? Admit it ! :D:D
Really helpful and makes it so much less scary than the written instructions Ive read online ! I get halfway thru and my mind goes “blah blah… i will never do this!” You make it look easy.:)
Im so glad you mentioned the lift from the root” thing”, that is a big issue for me ! I a major volume girl and so many of the wigs seem flat to the head. It will be completely noticeable if I go to straight hair after all the years of rolling to make it wavy and teasing to make it look like more hair. (oh the things we do………….)
Do you know if you can use Caruso Steam curlers in Follea wigs. It might help me to do that for awhile since they have been my “masking agent” for yrs. haha Then it will look like more like me until I get the courage to wear it straighter. But, if Im paying for the wig I don’t want to destroy it just because Im afraid of a new “look”.
Looking forward to the next edition ! Idk what you do for a living, but I thing you’ve found your calling l ! 😀 xoxo

Great Video! I thought I was the only one who did head shakes to my own bio hair! I also lay on my bed upset down to dry my hair, it really does give it volume! Cant wait to see how she looks on you!

Lol Phillygrl, I totally do the same thing. I’ve got my glass of wine here and everything! I am engrossed with the wig washing series and I don’t even OWN a wig. 😉 I am going to be super prepared to wash that baby once I get it though.

Can’t wait to see how the wig looks after it dries. I can only imagine how awesome that feels to just put on a great wig after only air drying. My hair would be an atrocious frizzy mess after air drying. Do the wigs ever get frizzy?

Hi Y,
Yes, it’s me again 🙂 and I accept the “blame” for saying: “let the tape roll”.
Awesome video again, I behaved much better this time and ate oatmeal instead of the strawberry shortcake ice cream 😉 (I prefer the ice cream!).
I love the videos and your attitude. It is extremely helping seeing someone so lovely and positive going through this experience, it’s like you make it “no big deal”.
I will admit, once all the video clips are done, I will be watching them consecutively from start to finish!
I love that your wig isn’t experience TE when you wash her – I haven’t washed mine yet, so fingers crossed.
Can’t wait for Installment 4. You rock and God Bless You.

You guys are so wonderful! Thanks for your support, I’m very much appreciative of the positive feedback, it’s good to know that women actually want to see this, me and my wigs. I’m sort of wanting to do videos o what I thought I would have like to have seen when I was in much search for wearing hair. So yay! I’m glad it’s helpful for some gals.

@Phillygrl – You can definitely use rollers in human hair wigs, I would be very hesitant to apply continuous heat on the wigs though over an extended amount of time. I bought some velcro rollers, which I have no idea how to use yet, I want to roll up Anya and see how she would turn out. But yes, if you get a wig and the rollers are going to help you WEAR the wig then by all means use the rollers. It will shorten the life of the wig somewhat, just like my over washing would, but we have to do whatever is necessary to help us feel more comfortable making the transition. I don’t know how much I shortened the life of the wig by over washing, but I was fully willing to accept whatever it was, because a wig I’m not going to wear because I’m not comfortable in how it’s making me feel, is worthless, so who cares how long it “would” normally last.. I’d rather do what I have to do to feel great in it.

@Mycurlyhair – shake shake shake, yup that’s me, used to be awesome when I had ALOT of hair. I also used to do the bed upset down thing too 🙂

@Christine – I’m so glad you like the series of wiggy washing. It feels good to be prepared, even if you’re not going to wear anytime soon it sort of takes the scariness that results from the mystery of the unknown away, which I think *may* just help with dealing with the daily grind of hair loss. It’s that knowledge, the knowing that one day you could *choose* something like a wig if you wanted to. The Follea wigs I have do not get frizzy at all, I don’t know how other brands would be, but this one has been pretty good.

@Lina – Oatmeal… good girl. I need do do more oatmeal myself.. less wine, more oats. Nah. So glad you are enjoing the videos so much and that they are helpful! To me, it is no big deal now. I’m okay with it, any negative I would possibly have from the wigs is way over shadowed by the freedom it’s given me, to be me again. Part 4 coming up shortly!

XOXO

I just got my Follea Lifestyle long topper on Valentine’s Day and washed it for first time myself last night. I was very nervous and gentle.
I think I did it wrong because it seems so frizzy and dried out now!! I want this to last as long as possible. Maybe I didn’t use enough conditioner? It used to be so silky and smooth!! It almost looks like the ends have split ends. The cut that the Follea person (Sophie) did was just added some textured layers to frame my face and those seem to not being laying the way they did before. Has anyone had this experience? Should I just condition it again? I am using the same shampoo and conditioner as in this video.

Hi Sharon – The washing process can take a bit to get the hang of and I think ultimately everyone finds their own way and what works best for them. While I don’t have a topper, I am familiar with the hair and that it looks different in varying conditions: too much conditioner… too little conditioner… didn’t get all conditioner out, air dry, blow dry.. both., round brush, flat iron etc. so many variables will produce all different outcomes.

If the hair comes out of the salon having had a blow out or flat iron, it will definitely appear different after you wash it at home and let it air dry. My wigs do not air dry silky smooth, but they don’t feel dry after an air dried wash either A blow out or flat ironing of the hair will easily produce that silky smooth effect. They are just different “looks” to me. My own hair dries in a similar fashion to my wigs, so if I’m leaving them in air dried look, I can leave my own hair air dried, if I flat iron my wigs or blow them out, I have to actually flat iron my own front hair (depending on how much I’m pulling out and how lazy I am .. lol ) to get it to match or the texture will be quite different.

Wearing hair is a process, in all aspects… from learning to wear it and learning to care for it, in the best way for you.

I would definitely contact the salon and talk to them about the issues you are having so they can assist.

XOXO
