Anya’s New Style & The Importance of Getting Your Wig Cut-In

by Y on August 21, 2012

Today was a great day, Vicka from Follea, snip snipped Anya (Lifestyle Wig) into supreme pure yumminess. She was awesome before, but even better now. I did take some video while there (of course) and I’ll hopefully get that up in the next few days, but for now I just wanted to do a quick video showing my new haircut and talking about the importance of getting your wig cut-in to fit you. It makes a difference, a big difference.  I think it’s important to make sure the person you have cutting your “hair” is skilled and has experience in cutting wigs, I personally wouldn’t want to chance it with a regular hair stylist, even though I have read that many people do, do that, it would still worry me.  The lighting in this video below is horrible so you’ll see the end result much better in the next video I put up.

Also, just a note, Vicka did tell me that it is REALLY important that you use four pins (2 at the sides and 2 at the nape) to properly block your wig prior to washing it. As you saw in the first video of the wig washing series, I only used 2 pins, but that’s because I only had 2 pins, I lost the rest quite some time ago. I do want to make sure I provide the correct information, so the next video will show a wig being properly blocked (secured to the mannequin head). Remember, I’m new to this too, I’m definitely not an expert by any means, just a girl living life, one wig at a time 🙂

Love it!! I can’t believe how soft and shiny it is!!!! The layers look great around your face too. Does she cut it while it’s on you? I think the answer is yes… Also, would you be able to change the part now?

Love the hair cut on your wig, it looks like my hair only lighter before I started to lose. I have lost the front of my hairline in addition to losing on top, so I am curious how a wig would look on me with no natural hair to stick out. You look so amazing with the wig it looks so natural! Puts a little bit of hope in me.

Most natural looking wig I’ve seen yet ! Seriously , if you look at some web sites of what they try to sell as “natural looking” (ahem…Paula Young, etc.) and then see yours, its not even close ! 😀
Had the most realistic dream last night. I got a call that my two Follea wigs were in, even held the sales order in my hands. Looks like my subconscious me is trying to get the CONSCIOUS me to get off her A#@ ?? lol So sad when I woke up and it wasnt true. Ah well, another day being a big CHICKEN !
Keep the videos rolling !:D XOXOXO

Thank you so much everyone!

@Hope4hair – It is soft & shiny… I love her so much. she’s my favorite for sure 🙂 Yes the wig is cut while on me, and I had the part set where I wanted prior to her cutting it. I could change the part and I’m sure it wouldn’t be an issue, but I won’t be, this is where I like the part the best for this wig. I only changed it in the washing video because the piece was brand new and didn’t have the part in the exact place I like it.

@Joy – Do you have any hairline at all ? Even a thin hairline would help to blend the wig in, it doesn’t take much. If a person isn’t working with any hairline at all then I think the pieces would require some time of a bang, side swept or regular and if you didn’t want bangs then I’d go with a lace front for sure.

@Christine – I am LOVING the layers, definitely makes the wig look even more natural, and I didn’t think that was possible, but having it cut is a definite must from what I see having had it done to 2 of my wigs. It just makes it more “me”

@phillygrl – I like your dream… It’s good you are thinking about it so much it’s creeping into your dreams, it all helps to get your mind used to the idea of what could be one day if you choose 🙂 I dream about wigs all the time.. ALL the time.

@Lina – Awww you’re so sweet. Hoping the wine/oats/ice cream has all been worked out. I’ve placed them in my own personal order of preference LOL.

XOXO

Another great video! I have a couple questions, as far as the bangs go, do you think that wig with bangs and not using your hair line would still be undetectable how it is on you? Or do you think a lace front is best.
Also, how is her line of curly hair wigs? I have curly hair but always wore longer straightish bangs and would want to continue that look.

Hi there. I SO appreciate your videos as they have given me hope. I am suffering from 3 consecutive years of aggressive telogen effluvium and am in the midst of the 3rd awful shed. The amount of hair loss daily is gut-wrenching though I have hope because of YOU 🙂 I have an appt with a Follea distributor in NYC on Sept 8th – I am at that point in the loss. I’m going to try on the Aero-2 and Lifestyle wigs you’ve so gorgeously been modeling and hoping to like one of them as much as you do. Hoping you could answer a few questions —
1. Can your bio hair continue to grow sitting underneath a wig all day?
2. How much/how little bio hair can you have for the wig to sit right/lay flat? I’m going to use the WiGrip just like you have.
3. You mentioned your WiGrip is pink but online they only seem to offer tan, brown and black. I have dark brown hair – white skin. Is the Wigrip supposed to match your skin color or hair color?? I already ordered one in tan and 1 in brown but now not sure I bought the right colors?

Funny tidbit – when I called Follea I said I wanted to try ‘the Anya and the Natalia’ and they were like, ummmm, she must be naming her wigs because we don’t do that! It was funny and cute. I think I’ll name mine too 🙂

@Beth – I definitely think the wig would look undetectable with bangs, bangs conceal the hairline, and that’s always the hardest part to get to look the most natural. So bangs, or placing it behind the hairline a little helps that a lot. But if you want the option to have the hair swept off the face, and you have zero hairline, then I’d personally go with a lacefront. I also do place my lace front behind my hairline still, but it really is meant to be able to replace it if need be. At some point I’ll slick back my own hair and do a video with the lacefront without using any of my hairline. All the videos I have of my lacefront wig do have the wig behind my hairline a little bit and I’m sure people would be curious how it would looks without any of my hairline.

When you make mention of “her” are you referring to Follea? If so, Follea isn’t the name of a lady, it’s the company name/brand wig. I think in the past Follea had a curly wig, but I don’t see it now in their current collection, however, the hair can be permed to the type curl you would be looking for. Something that has to be done by professional familiar with working on wigs. That’s scary all onto itself, so I’d ask to see pics of their perm work if you where doing that. Not sure if people take pics, but I’d want to see them! The video I’ll be putting up soon that has footage of yesterday actually shows us with a wig that was permed, it was just one we used as an example to block the wig. It’s a different type of curl, not the spirally ones, but more of a curl/wave.. I actually love that look a lot. You’ll see it soon. But, wigs can be permed just like our own hair can 🙂

@Kim – I’m sorry to hear you are going through a shed right now, but I am glad you are finding hope! I love that. There is hope, everyone need to take that to heart. Congrats on making an appointment to see some Follea wigs! Sept 8th is right around the corner. I look forward to hearing about your experience!

As far as your questions:

1) I’m not a doctor, but I’m going to say, Yes with a fair degree of certainty that your hair can grow underneath a wig, there is space under there, it is breathable, no one would be able to wear a wig so tight that hair couldn’t grow 🙂

2) I’m not sure the exact 100% answer on this one, but anyone can wear a wig, someone with a ton of hair to someone with a few strands, but I think it probably will fit well on someone with thin or thinning hair, us basically! I think the issue in wearing a wig gets more complicated when a person has a ton of hair to put away, and I don’t think that person is reading this site, ha. I think I still had too much hair like 5 years ago, and if I really wanted to go the wig route at that time and had too much bulk I would cut my hair short and leave the front bangs longer to integrate with the wigs.

3) The “tan” one is the pink one LOL. It looks pink to my eyes. The color of the grip is of zero importance on the lifestyle wigs or any regular wig that wasn’t a lace top since the part line is not yours, it’s made with a silk top or monofilament thingy, it just “looks” like your hairline, but it’s totally covering your hair on top. With the lace top you can see the Grip, and it peeks through a bit pink, but it’s still fine. I don’t feel self conscious going out like that. No one will know why there is a pink tinge there. I also have the brown one. I think the most important color you got was the light one since you are going to be trying on the Aero-2 wig, you’ll definitely want that one.

That’s so funny that you asked Follea for the wigs by MY names for them. Yea, they don’t name the wigs, but they are so pretty and deserve a name, so I name them all, they are my “girls.”

@Angie- She has lots of swing! You’ll see it better in the next video. Good way to put it, yes she has a new personality now for sure!

XOXO

Thank you so much for the videos. What type of wig is best when you have a little bit of hairline? Would it be the lace front or the other type?

Bella, bella! I love the new cut. It looks great and 100% natural on you. I guess this is what movie stars/celebrities do when they are losing their hair. They go for Follea! Glad to see your continued smiles!

@Cassy – I think the “regular” types of wigs work REALLY well when you are integrating your own hair line but on my lace wig, after I cut the lace wayyyy back it worked good too, but I had more of a struggle working with it. I think you have to try them on in person and see what suits you the best. If I had zero hairline, it would be the lace hands down, unless I was going to cut a bang into the wig.

@Ann – Thank you!!!

You look so gorgeous and happy with your new cut!

I recently had a consultation with a local salon that carries Follea wigs. I tried on the one you have on (the lifestyle-2 wig in medium), but it looked really ” wiggy” on me. I also felt that it was A LOT of hair and didn’t feel like myself in it. The wig had just arrived, so I literally tried it on after my stylist took it off the bag.

Had the wig been styled the first time you put it on? For me, the wig had too much volume, and almost too much hair (I never even had that much hair when I was 13 years old)! I either 1) have much less hair left than you and other ladies on the network and that’s why all the hair on the wig felt a little overwhelming, or 2) trying the wig without giving it a cut or perhaps even straightening the hair is what made it looked really wiggy on me.

I would appreciate any feedback you may have. Thanks so much for sharing all this information with us!

@Kyle –

I’m sorry to hear you didn’t have that great of an experience, nothing worse than feeling wiggy in a wig, that’s for sure. Follea may not be the hair for you, I’ve heard that for some women they’ve found that the hair was too fine for their needs because it didn’t closely resemble their bio hair enough, and they wanted MORE volume, in your case it’s the opposite, it was too much hair. In my case it was the perfect hair for my needs.

My first Follea wig (Natalia) had not been styled at all when I bought it, I bought it straight out of the bag and let me say my experience with human hair wigs, is that if they are coming out of the bag they need to be first washed to really get to see the true look of the wig. I didn’t style it at all, I just washed it when I got home (since I knew I was keeping it) and then hung her upside down, I was amazed how wonderful she looked the next day. She looked really good to me when I left the salon the day of purchase, but she was a little flat on top and maybe “pressed down” all over LOL

If the wig has too much volume for you, I don’t personally feel (I’m not an expert so it’s just my hunch) that this isn’t really going to be improved by a wash, having the hair cut-in on you to your style will help, but I feel like that’s a big risk to take with an expensive piece because maybe it will still be too much hair for you.

Finding a wig is so very personal and individual to all of us, I think it matters what hair we had before, since that is likely where we are trying to get to, or close to. I’ve stated before that my bio hair prior to my hair loss was actually thicker than my Follea wigs, shockingly sadly true. I’d say my wigs are about indicative of where I was 4-5 years into my hair loss, and the amount of hair my wigs have works very well for me. I wouldn’t buy a wig that had the amount of hair I had prior to the loss because that for sure would look out of sorts on me now and it isn’t hair I’ve had for quite sometime now since i have been dealing with my hair loss for 13 years.

Of the wigs I do have, I have found Follea to be the lightest and it is one of the traits that was extremely attractive about it.

I can say that I don’t own a wig I can just throw on, let it land and be out the door. I do have my own little process I do which takes a couple minutes for me to finesse the hair into place and that includes pulling out my own hair line and setting the wig just ever so slightly behind it. Then combing it etc etc. When I first put the wig on prior to adjusting it’s placement, combing it etc, it will look like a wig. I think a wig is more likely to be a “Land and Go” wig if it has bangs, bangs are more forgiving.

Did you see any toppers? Or are toppers out due to the clips? I’m wondering if a topper would be better for you because it would have a lot less hair and may make you feel more like you.

Lastly I will say wearing a wig, takes a commitment to the idea of wearing a wig, because guess what ladies… IT’S A WIG! 🙂 It is still a full cap on your head and will require the ability to deal with that concept (and the adjusting it takes to get used to it) and for some it’s an out of the question thing, I’m comfortable with it and for whatever I do feel from time to time, all that pales in comparison to feeling comfortable in my own skin again. Some women find they are able to be more comfortable in a bonded topper and I may try bonding one day too. There are options, but we have to find what’s best for us and not every brand will work for everyone, we all have difference expectations and needs of what we are looking for.

Does that help at all ? 🙂

XOXO

Hello! I too am suffering from hair loss. Scalp biopsy revealed chronic TE and FPB. I have been going through this for almost two years… It really sucks! I am now ready for hair; your videos have helped me for sure! I am contemplating a Follea Lifestyle 2 in radiant blonde. I am very concerned with it looking realistic. I went to a representative, she did not have a lifestyle on hand, she had an aero and gripper. Although they were both beautiful I feel like you could tell the scalp was not real because of the lace. I have heard that the lifestyle is much more realistic, and since I have a little hair of my own I would be able to pull it out of the front. What do you think? Is the lifestyle more realistic? I’m not really concerned about cost I just want something that’s going to look great and make me feel like myself again. Well, like my new self. Thanks for listening!!

Hello there. I’m currently suffering from medical hair loss (I’ve been diagnosed with a blood disorder and need to take medication for the rest of my life). Sadly, the medication has made me lose approximately 80% of my hair and I face the very real prospect of total hair loss with 3-6 months. I’m based in the UK and have to say that I’m really struggling with the options available to me here. I went to see a Follea representative yesterday in London and to be honest after high hopes, came away feeling quite sad and disappointed. The rep was a nice enough person and showed me a couple of blonde colours in the Aero 2 range (size medium). Once placed on my head straight out if the bag it felt so utterly peculiar. Firstly, despite being told it did fit (it felt as though it was going to pull off at the front and roll up at the back); I had been to another wig maker prior to this appointment and had tried on something that felt comfortable, so tried to convey to the rep that I didn’t think that the medium was the right size. I was then told that Follea only do one size and if that doesn’t fit you, then you have to have one custom made to fit. Is this correct? Am I honestly expected to pay upfront for a wig without even having the opportunity of trying one on in my size? What is happens if I buy an Aero 2 or Lifestyle and I don’t like how it sits? I’m stuck with a product that I’ve had to pay for with a no returns policy. This seems so unfair to those of us that don’t appear to confirm to a standard sized head. As if it’s not hard enough already trying to deal with hair loss, wig companies don’t even supply their sales reps with all the sizes so that customers can make an informed decision. Whilst I was told I could try on a size large cap size, how could I judge whether I preferred that size to the medium when it appeared to be apparent that I was between sizes. I’m now left to thinking that my best course of action is to invest my time and efforts in learning to make my own wig and sourcing my own hair; I have already found a reputable hair broker in my country who has already sent me a few small ponytail samples of the most beautiful hair. Maybe this is the way forward for all of us?!! X

I felt that it had just been plonked on my head any old way, whilst the rep stepped back to gauge my reaction. Honestly, all I wanted to do is take the fake looking thing straight off my head. I’m totally ok with the idea of wearing a wig, that’s not an issue for me at all, but why do Follea make these wigs so full of hair
