Hi, I realize this is an old post and I don’t even know if it’ll even get a response, but I am at a loss and wanted to share my experience in hopes someone else can relate and help.

I first noticed my hair shedding a year ago and suspected it was from my birth control pills because it was the only medication I was taking. I stopped taking it Oct 2019 and from then til June 2020 continued to diffuse shed. I assumed it was telogen effluvium since everything I researched said it was normal for this to happen when starting and stopping birth control. In March I went to the derm to get my blood tested and the results came back with out of range slightly high testosterone and very out of range high DHEAS. Also, my periods had been long ever since I took birth control. This worried me because these were symptoms of PCOS and from what I understand the hair loss would be permanent. So did I have TE or AGA? And can birth control cause PCOS?

Unfortunately due to COVID, I wasn’t able to schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist. In the meantime, I tried to supplement with multivitamin, magnesium, bamboo silica, dong quai, peony and licorice, and collagen powder. I use a wood comb and brush only when my hair is dry. I switched to coil hair bands. I used a rosemary peppermint shampoo from Aveda. I attempted to dermaroll my scalp with rosemary oil. My diet hasn’t changed and I eat plenty of protein and fish. I mostly drink water and tea. I tried to de-stress by distracting myself with hobbies. But despite everything, my hair continued to shed and thin. My temples and top diffuse shed so even though my part hasn’t widened, I’m starting to see scalp under light and when I try flipping to new part. The hairline at my part has also thinned so much that my scalp is visible with like 15 strands keeping it from becoming a bald spot. I can’t put my hair in a ponytail without my part showing, or without making that balding spot in the front more pronounced. My once thick locks are reduced to individual wispy strands. I tried to throw everything at fixing the problem and it only seems to slowly get worse. I drove myself crazy looking at my hair in different lighting and part, occasionally thinking it’s not that bad to omg I’m going bald. It didn’t help that my mom, sister and boyfriend all told me they don’t see it and that I look fine.

I finally had an appointment with an endocrinologist in July and based on my March test results and irregular periods, she automatically said PCOS and recommended more birth control pills and Rogaine. I refused because I do not want to be at the mercy of medication for the rest of my life that doesn’t actually fix my hormonal imbalance but just slaps a bandaid on the symptoms. Also, I don’t want to rebound lose all my hair again when I inevitably have to stop taking them to get pregnant. I never had these issues until I went on birth control and I regret ever having done it. I eventually agreed to 50mg Spiro because I previously took it for acne and didn’t have negative side effects. I also started taking inositol to see if it helped regulate my periods. I don’t know if it helps, but I’m treating it as a stop gap to try to get some regrowth while I continue to look for a permanent solution. I also asked for a follow up blood test to see how my hormones were doing. My testosterone was normal but was the highest acceptable range. My DHEAS went even higher.

I’m scheduled to see another endocrinologist in Nov to get a second opinion and also help find the root cause of my adrenal issue. But I am at a loss for what more I can do. I’m depressed, scared, frustrated, angry, hopeless, alone, and I keep crying. I broke down at the idea of ordering Toppik. I don’t ever want to think about a wig because I will always feel like a fraud. I’m only 30 and I shouldn’t be worrying about my hair for the next 50 years of my life. I can’t live like this. But I don’t know how to cope. I came on here trying to find success stories to reassure myself that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but it pisses me off that in the decade since the first posts that doctors still don’t have any clue (or maybe they just don’t care) besides shoving birth control and Rogaine at us.

Hi I have really appreciated all the stories about Spiro. I have been noticing shedding for a while now and then my stylist brought it up. UGH!!!! I noticed in one of the posts someone mentioned PPD from hair dye. Can you give more info? I started using a salon hair dye a while back as I have been thinking about when this started and I am wondering if that could be it. Thank you for any help you could give me. I am going to see my doctor Friday.

I have been losing my hair for over 4 years. The shedding has been severe and has become noticeable. I have gone down every path (thyroid, progesterone, inflmation, gut issues, etc). I had been taking spiro at 100 which slowed it, but never stopped it. I came off the spiro and the shed was severe. I decided to go back on at 100 and again had a massive shed for weeks. I finally decided to go to a dose of 200 and the shedding meaningfuly slowed within days. It had not completely stopped, but I am encouraged and hopeful!! I also did PRP, but not sure if it helped. I am 46 and have AGA.

Please help!! I started bio-identical hormones in hopes of correcting some hair loss I was having at the beginning of the year. I started in June. I continued on the same dose for until October when she upped my progesterone and testosterone since the hair loss was getting worse not better she also had me try armour even though my thyroid tested ok. In November I started shedding like crazy. Clumps falling out - I have lost half my head of hair since November. I quit all medication on November 20th and started spironolactone on Dec 3rd. I have not noticed any difference in the shedding. My question is - if it was the testosterone causing the massive hair shedding how long until I will know if the spironolactone is working and how long do you think until all these hormones are out of system? Thank you, I am desperate for answers.. Going crazy!!!

Hi! I have a hair loss question? I am 41 years old. I have been on Spiro. For 7 years 100mg. I went of BeYaz in May after being on this generation of BC for 14 years.(yaz, Yasmin, beyaz) 21 years total on BC. I have thyroid and adrenal issues. I broke my foot in June and had to have surgery. I have been non weight bearing for 12 weeks.

My hair has started to come out in handfuls. To the point I am afraid to wash or brush. I can see my scalp in a ponytail. Any thoughts??

Thanks..

Hi ladies. I realize these posts are fairly old, but I'm hoping to get some feedback. I have been on spiro for roughly a year but recently started to experience a severe shedding issue. I was only on 50mg and two weeks ago was increased to 100mg and will eventually be put on 200mg. Has anyone ever experienced a higher shedding incident when increasing spiro and if you have, will it subside? My shedding has significantly increased and I am completely stressed out. I have been diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia. No one, other than my grandfather, has had any type of balding or thin hair. I love that gene pool.
Thanks for any input.

I have also had cortisone injections in the scalp and eyebrows which seem to help. I have had iron IVs, where my ferritin went up to 67 and 375, whereas before it was as low as 5, 7, 19. I realized that low ferritin was not the only issue, as the iron IVs clearly did not make a change in my hair growth. Actually, when I had low ferritin, the two times I did take it, the hair seemed to return. But I realized something was not right, when after taking iron IVs, the iron no longer worked. The missing link is another issue - the immune response comes from the gut, and can affect hair growth, as well as hormonal issues. A good practice would be to take probiotics with a wide range of lactobacillus and bifido strains. Note that people who have alopecia areata, of body hair, most all of them have h.pylori which is an intestinal disorder. In fact, the microbiome of the gut is now believed to be the starting point of all diseases. Hair loss is an immune response on the skin. Take Zyrtec for allergies, to lessen the body's response - I have read of this in a medical journal as an aid. Ask about Metronidizole cream to apply to the scalp, which has been used to help with hair loss. For those who have rosacea, note that it arises out of dysbiosis of the gut. It similarly is a reaction on the skin, and hair loss a reaction by the follicles. Look up research articles on Pubmed where I found all of this info - just type in the key words. Someone ask Dr. Redmond about the above items - I don't know if he also uses them. Particularly, about Propecia, there is a side effect on the breasts, and I wonder if anyone knows if this medicine is something he then chooses if spiro doesn't work. I myself have only done spiro, and don't want to do hormones, so as not to increase cancer risk. Take B vitamin range, silica and collagen.
